Photo Archive and Book Questions and Answers

  1. What can I do? You can be a photographer, or you can help us in selecting and processing photographs, and perhaps in other ways as well.

  2. When can I do it? On the first photo day beginning at midnight and through the day of November 14 ending at midnight. And similar to this in later photo days.

  3. Who owns my photographs? You own the copyright if you took the picture (unless you did it for your employer). But you allow us to use your photos we select in a book without charge, and will be required to sign a release granting this use in the Photographers Registration.

  4. Can I be compensated for my work? Yes, if we select your photo for sale or if someone wants to use it commercially. In those cases the ARTS Center will retain a commission and you will get the rest.

  5. How do I agree to participate? Complete the Volunteer Form and/or the Photographer Registration Form by printing them and mailing them to Photo Archive, 212 Butler Street, Clemson, SC 29631.

  6. Is there a deadline? We will have a deadline roughly two weeks after each photo day. Submitting your photos after that will require approval of the project director, and can reduce their chance of selection.

  7. Do I have to live in Clemson? No, you just have to have an association with Clemson. To us, this means you are a resident, work here, go to Clemson University or work there, or are driving through on your way somewhere and made an interesting photo.

  8. Where can I shoot the photos? We are documenting the Clemson community, so wherever that is. We expect most of the photos to be in or near the city or campus. We also expect some to be farther away.

  9. Does it cost anything? Only the expenses you choose to incur in making and processing the photos. There is no admission or participation fee. If you want to participate but cannot afford to or do not have a camera, email photo@explorearts.org and tell us.

  10. Will my photos be in the book? We don't know yet. Not all photos, in fact probably only a small portion, will be selected for the book. But if the jurors find that your photo represents the Clemson community, it will be in the archive.

  11. This must cost something. Where did the money come from? Clemson City Council provided startup funds to create and maintain the archive from city fees which are required to be used for tourism and culture.

  12. Where will be profit for book sales go? It is intended to support programs at The ARTS Center. We hope there will be profits.

  13. Where can I buy the book? That is yet to be determined. It will be publicly announced when we complete publication plans, probably in 2010.

  14. Can I participate in all four seasons? Yes. You can even contribute to the archive on other dates as well, but those photos will not be selected for the book.

  15. What if no book is published because it costs too much, or for some other reason? We will all be very disappointed, you will still have had a chance to enjoy photography, and your photos will be part of a very fine archive.

  16. What if I shoot on a different day? You can still submit photos to the archive, but they will not be considered for the Clemson Seasons book. Del Kimbler, project director, plans to put many of his Clemson scenes from other days in the archive, and you can, too.

  17. Are there other ways to help with the project? Yes, volunteers can help in cataloging photos and dealing with the logistics of the project. They can also help in selecting the best of the shoots.

  18. In what other ways will my photos be used? To advertise and promote the archive and book project, in an exhibit at the Arts Center.

  19. Who decides which photos will go into the archive? All suitable entries will be placed in the archive. Suitable means consistent with the theme of Clemson community and usable as a photograph.

  20. Who decides which photos will go into the proposed book? Panels of volunteer jurors from the community will select photos for the proposed book. The book editors will make the final decisions.

  21. Will I get my memory card, DVD, CDROM and printed photos back? Printed photos will not be returned (so don't give us big fancy prints). Memory devices and DVD/CDROM can be picked up at The Arts Center on designated days posted on this website.

  22. How much experience do I need and how old do I have to be? You need enough experience to operate your camera. If you can read this, you are old enough.

  23. Why four seasons? In recognition of the Clemson slogan "In season, every season".
